The inspiration behind the complete remodel on Chelsea Avenue in the Bird Rock area of La Jolla was to take advantage of the panoramic views of the coast by adding an outdoor, rooftop deck and living space.
This project was all about the details, both structural and aesthetic. We used a team approach to bring this modern beach style home to life while keeping the personal preferences of the homeowner in mind and minimizing impacts on the environment. Many onsite design meetings with the Architect, designer and building team took place during all phases of construction.. This home has a modern look but incorporates natural materials to bring in the beautiful surroundings and achieving a warm feel and seamless indoor / outdoor flow.
We recycled any material that could be deconstructed, such as cabinets, doors, windows, plumbing fixtures, appliances, concrete, aluminum, and wood. New materials that were introduced, like the concrete countertops and glass mosaics, have 40%-60% recycled content. The existing cabinetry was re-purposed at another beach house and the old doors and windows were taken to donation centers. Another innovative design strategy was the smart home technology that controls all lighting, shades, security, landscaping, and media and security, making this home easy to operate even when traveling. The rooftop deck is spectacular and the client entertains and enjoys his new panoramic ocean views often with his friends and family.
This home was one of the first LEED certified homes in La Jolla and received numerous awards, magazine articles and featured on the LEED and Dwell home tours.
